Microsoft preps StartKey -- Windows on a Stick
Microsoft is working on turning USB-based flash drives into a “Windows companion” — a new product known as “StartKey” — that will allow users to carry their Windows and Windows Live settings with them.
StartKey isn’t just for USB sticks; it also will work on other flash-storage devices, like SD memory cards. Microsoft is looking to turn these intelligent storage devices portable “computing companions” for users in both developed and emerging markets, with availability (at least in beta form) likely before the end of this year, according to sources who asked not to be named.

In Our Opinion: Multiplexed Users on Windows XP and Server
The ongoing MS licensing dilemma for multi-user terminal providers (such as Ncomputing) took a new turn in January with written indication from MS that license terms do not permit multiple users under desktop systems (ie XP Pro).
Given the lackluster inroads Vista has made it is is also notable that it is Vista which is specifically referred to.
Still, it would seem with major expansion of Linux and other avenues that Microsoft somehow coming to terms with this is in their best interest. It's not often a major footprint is there for the taking (ie requiring just formulating license terms) especially as the market looks to Microsoft to capitalize and develop new markets.
Probably the first would be in the terminal server/winserver implementation but XP Pro would start a flood.

Intel Study: Thin Client Competition Is Wide Open
Intel Study: Interestingly, the study found that the Terminal Services model isn't being newly adopted by companies at nearly the clip that other, newer models are. While 64 percent of respondents said their companies have deployed Terminal Services in some capacity, just an additional 2 percent reported plans to deploy within the next two years. That 3 percent growth rate is dwarfed by a 27 percent anticipated growth rate for the OS Streaming (15 percent current deployment to 19 percent within two years) and Blade PC (26 percent to 33 percent) models; 21 percent growth for Desktop Virtualization (39 percent to 47 percent); and 20 percent for Application Streaming (30 percent to 36 percent).

Coding -- stateful clients and comparison of adobe flex, google web tool and OpenLazlo
Kevin Whinnery blog -- The defining characteristic of any RIA is that it has a stateful client that is (or should be) platform and browser independent. With the advent of new RIA platforms like Flex, GWT, and OpenLaszlo, developers now have all the reach of a traditional thin-client web application with many of the useful characteristics of thick-client applications, such as the ability to maintain state on the client. Is there a clear winner of the three, one toolkit that developers should focus on at the expense of the others?

Browser Technology - Silverlight 2.0 Comments
We've all heard about Silverlight from Microsoft but I think most of us have tagged it with the "by the time MS gets the stuff repackaged a bunch of new stuff will likely have overtaken it...". I'm pretty interested in what I can do today to build applications and if I look back historically, most of what I use today has come from more templated commodity mass adopted technology (PHP for example)than any of the at-the-time touted cool stuff I was told I'd need to be using.
Still, it's a nice writeup by this fellow and "rich" apps under browsers is definitely on my want list.

Perspective - Thin-Client Boom, Finally?
Okay here they come...Momentum watchers are beginning to come out of the bushes with the "Ok, maybe its time has come" projection. We personally believe that the best thing to ever happen to the thin-client market is Vista. Feb2008 will be one of the first demarcation lines in the battle (ie I can't buy XP Pro OEM anymore...).
Anyway, nice article on NY Times blog (Wyse also believes Vista is major catalyst...).

Appears Intel has had a change of heart and will now join the board of OLPC and contribute funding. That's a good thing and definitely nicer than the prior stance it had which seemed to put corporate profit ahead of public good. The OLPC machine is a technological miracle in how it manages power and all it takes is one visit to backcountry of Nigeria to understand significance of power (or absence of).
