India's retail industry is facing tight margins and a lot of pressure from the other competitors who vie for the same market share and in this scenario; it is very difficult to differentiate. Whether in the company headquarters, in warehousing, or in retail branches, the correct IT solution in supply logistics, merchandise management and marketing holds a lot of importance to business success.

As a direct result of this, CIOs and IT managers are under a lot of pressure to ensure that there is secure access to information and to efficiently manage resources, while minimizing costs related to their allocated IT budgets.

At a time like this, the retail sector in India is surely looking for solutions that can provide the much needed fillip to its existing IT infrastructure and utilize it to the full. And also provide, the much needed flexibility, help conserve resources and simplify processes while providing a competitive edge.

Thin clients provide competitive edge

In addition to the popular centralization of merchandise management systems and other applications, a major trend in present day retail industry is the practice of workstation infrastructures. As part of this trend, the server-based computing or (SBC) model with standardized and efficient thin clients is replacing the more expensive PC-based client/ server networks. In SBC, all essential core applications and data back ups are run centrally on terminal servers.

This lean and thin approach allows employees to always access the same desktop, whether they are in the company headquarters, branch offices or even in their home offices. Hence, it delivers the businesses the much needed flexibility to operate at their own pace.

The reliable, centralized management with server-based computing allows additional workstations to be quickly and easily integrated. Thin clients can also cut power consumption by up to 51 percent and help protect the environment through less use of materials, less transport and less electronic waste (e-waste).

The 'Plug and Play' capability of a thin client makes it ideal for the retail industry of the country. As a result, in order to meet the competitive nature of the business, new stores and offices can be set up within no time. The customer-friendly, touch screen-based application access that a thin client provides ensures simplicity and makes training easy for the training sector hence, moving forward, thin client based IT strategy is sure to deliver what the retail industry is looking for.
