Passport to hell: why thin client desktops must die

Sean Gallagher on Ars Technica gives the to heck with thin clients (in certain situations). He definitely speaks from experience having cut his teeth on SCO and Xenix and those infamous Wyse terminals (still in use we should add...).
The HP Passport 1912NM Internet Monitor has an 18.5-inch display and a few components to facilitate quick access to the Internet. Once the thin client is fired up, users can access Web services like Google Docs or watch videos through a browser.
MyCloud, the library's new program rolled out in June, uses HP 6360t Mobile Thin Clients and HP TouchSmart PCs to provide digital accounts for library goers. Patrons can surf the web, access library resources, and save files, bookmarks and preferences so they are available any time they visit the library. MyCloud also provides access to powerful software applications, such as photo-editing tools and business-management applications.
'Helix Nebula - the science cloud', set up earlier this year to support the massive IT requirements of European scientists and create a cloud computing market for the public sector in Europe, has today announced the initial deployment of its first flagship applications in high energy physics, molecular biology and natural disaster recovery.

Illinois court beefs up service with thin clients

Approximately 1,900 Clerk's Office employees -- more than 80 percent of the court's staff -- traded in slow, aging computer terminals for new HP Thin Client technology supported by HP ProLiant blade servers and HP storage with VMware virtualization software.
IGEL Technology, one of the world's leading manufacturers of thin clients, is now shipping the first evaluation units of its new UD2-LX MultiMedia - a compact and cost-effective system-on-chip (SoC) thin client for virtualized desktops and Server Based Computing environments.
