Notes from Jeff Groudan of HP on new PoE t410 Zero Client

We got the chance to ask Jeff Groudan of HP a few questions on the new t410. Last week HP announced the HP t410 All-in-One Smart Zero Client - a powerful new zero client that operates within 13 watts of power envelope over PoE(1) while still providing outstanding multimedia performance and a true PC-like experience. The HP t410 AiO was shown at Citrix Synergy 2012 in San Francisco.
Some of the points that were made included:

    • This is not your standard CPU.  The ARM cpu used here is next generation 1Ghz. In this case the Cortex from ARM and Texas Instruments.
    • PoE logistics advantage -- everyone knows that locations get problematic very quick for the usual PC. You will find a CAT5 connection but your standard AC power might need to be installed and if it is often dirty power.
    • Power -- 13 watts required. Considering the 19" LCD this is pretty amazing.  Typically you would be lucky to get it 20+ watts
    • LCD brightness -- how bright is it?  200 Nits (same as a laptop on AC power)
    • LCD brightness -- how did they do it? Turns out the engineers at 3M have a new coating that reflects the light and increases the brightness. That's a new one on us and bears a little further research.
    • LCD & Touch -- So given 3M, what about touch? -- Touch capable for sure.  Touch would drive it up to next power level (25W)
    • Notable input devices -- Wireless keyboard and mouse
    • Performance baseline -- Same as dual-core thinclient,
    • Overall "big" benefits -- the benefits of zero management
