ViewSonic Corp. is doubling down on its virtualization strategy with the launch of two new thin clients alongside a zero client, both designed to attack the slowly dwindling need for traditional computing environments.
The new trio of clients are built to support VESA mounts, hiding them neatly behind any svelte monitor, plus support for the latest virtualized protocols, including Microsoft Corp.'s RemoteFX, Citrix Corp's HDX and VMware Inc.'s PC over IP (PCoIP). Built for 1080p output and low energy consumption, ViewSonic can cast a large net, hitting the SMB and the enterprise.
The SC-T35 Thin Client features an ARM CPU running a special ARM version of Linux for a "low cost" solution, while the SC-T45 features an Atom CPU for more intensive processes and Windows environments. These units can be managed using ViewSonic's Device Management suite.
The Sc-Z55 Zero Client is for a target market, specifically health care, government and financial institutions where endpoint security means having hardly an endpoint at all. Running exclusively on VMware's PCoIP protocol this client has no moving parts, no on-board memory and consumes hardly energy. This also makes the SC-Z55 useful in environments where hundreds of desktops need to be deployed.
ViewSonic's partner program, dubbed the "Finch Club," has focused heavily around display opportunities, promoting ViewSonic's latest smart screens and digital signage options. But its growing virtualization portfolio is a sign of things to come.
When Channelnomics last checked in with ViewSonic, Jeff Volpe, ViewSonic's Americas president, agreed that the "PC-less" era was on its way, but said it would be a lengthy transition. However, it's progressing at a faster rate every year and shrinking PC sales don't bode well for a company which focuses heavily on displays. Thus, ViewSonic's Thin Client efforts are a strategy that can keep ViewSonic nimble through market transitions and continue to pull attached screen sales, even as the display market shrinks, too.
While this particular launch focuses around high intensity enterprise environments, ViewSonic also targets the educational vertical, a smart place for smart displays and smart clients. That level of commitment on the next wave of computing is critical for ViewSonic's success and Volpe seemed to agree, attesting that the focus on connected computing will be the how ViewSonic's solution portfolio will come into "greater focus" in the near future.
